How would you describe the work you do and why?

My work is inspired by the natural beauty of the land and sea I have experienced in my time living on the coast in the East Neuk of Fife in Scotland and now in Herefordshire. I throw to have pots to decorate and unapologetically make two contrasting styles work. The glazed work representing my view of the Scottish surf are full of texture, colour and glistening glazes. By contrast my slipware pots use slips in a painterly fashion or I use hand cut stencils and mark making to add more detail, imagery and texture to the work. The countryside collection is rooted in Herefordshire to evoke a sense of the land that is at the heart of rural life, whereas as my Sea collection reflects life in and on the sea.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

I would describe myself as a potter, if those who appreciate my work describe me as an artist, that is for someone else to choose. I work on my craft and expressing my ideas and images in my head onto the clay, with the intent to evoke a connection and emotional response from others who view my work and enjoy it.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

I am a potter based in Leintwardine, in rural north Herefordshire, making wheel-thrown hand decorated stoneware pots.

Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:

I use a white clay called KGM, firing at around cone 6-7 in my electric kiln. I work from a studio in my garden. I run 6 week group courses as well as offering 1:1s and 2 hour introduction to wheel throwing classes.
